The website which registers for this service inserts a code in the pages they wish to track. This code monitors all their traffic all the time and displays a small graphic. When someone clicks on this button, he/she is taken to the site’s statistics page. If the member has opted for a paid upgrade, the image can be made invisible and the stats password protected.
